Employing Sports Coaches in Schools
Northamptonshire Sport is running the FANTASTIC Coach campaign which aims to drive up the standard of coaches in Northamptonshire’s schools. The campaign provides schools with a checklist to help ensure that coaches are appropriately qualified, suitable and safe.
The FANTASTIC coach checklist outlines the minimum qualifications and standards that a sports coach working in schools should meet:
National Curriculum aware?
Trained in safeguarding?
Appropriate to work with children?
Skilled and competent?
Their employment status checked?
See the FANTASTIC Coach checklist and supporting guidance on the Northamptonshire Sport website: www.northamptonshiresport.org/fantastic
Northamptonshire Sport has also put together a list of the many sports national governing bodies (NGB's) that coaches belong to, highlighting which sports bodies require their members to have safeguarding training - for many this is not mandatory. Schools should be aware of this when employing coaches.
See Northamptonshire Sports list of NGB requirements for safeguarding and DBS checks.
