Breck's Last Game - Campaign Update

You may well be aware that Northamptonshire Police is working in a consortia with Leicestershire, Surrey and Essex in producing a short film called Breck’s Last Game, which tells the true story of Breck Bednar, a Surrey schoolboy who was groomed via an online gaming site and murdered by his groomer in 2014.

The film has been produced to highlight the dangers of online grooming to teenage boys and follows the successful production by Leicestershire Police two years ago of the film Kayleigh’s Love Story, made about the grooming and murder of 15-year-old schoolgirl Kayleigh Haywood.

This is an update on the progress being made with this film.

An extensive programme of consultation about the first edit of Breck’s Last Game has now been completed, having been seen by just under 1,000 people in the four force areas, as well as to national experts. As a result, a number of changes are now to be made to the film before it is offered to schools to be shown to children.

Some new scenes are to be filmed as part of the changes in order to address the main themes emerging from the consultation, including the need to make more overt how Breck was groomed and to highlight the online gaming elements of the case.

The second edit will be finished in July and, following further consultation, it is anticipated that the film will be screened to the media on Wednesday, 19 September.

It is then hoped that schools in all four force areas will show the film to children from September onwards before the film is released online for general viewing in January next year.

In Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, the film will form the centrepiece of a wider campaign to raise greater public awareness of CSE and to help children, parents and carers better safeguard those who may be vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
